Working with a Cinematographer in New Jersey: What to Expect

Award-winning cinematographer Ishell Vaughan shares insights on gear, budgets, and logistics for New Jersey-based shoots, from Newark to NYC.

Why New Jersey Is a Hidden Gem for Filmmakers

New Jersey offers a unique blend of urban grit and suburban polish, with Newark’s industrial backdrops and Jersey City’s waterfront skyline providing versatile locations. The state’s proximity to NYC means access to top-tier crew, equipment rentals, and post-production facilities without the Manhattan price tag. Permitting is also streamlined compared to New York City, where bureaucracy can add weeks to pre-production. For indie filmmakers and commercial directors, this makes NJ a cost-effective alternative that doesn’t sacrifice quality.

Gear and Budget Considerations

My go-to cameras for New Jersey shoots are the ARRI Alexa Mini LF and the RED Komodo, both of which handle the state’s variable lighting—from the harsh sun of a Hoboken rooftop to the low-light interiors of a Newark warehouse—with ease. For budgets under $50K, the Sony FX6 or Canon C500 Mark II deliver excellent results without the rental costs of higher-end rigs. Lenses are where you can save: vintage glass from companies like Cooke or Angénieux pairs well with digital bodies, and local rental houses in Jersey City or nearby Brooklyn offer competitive rates.

Post-production is another area where NJ shines. Facilities like Rule Boston Camera have expanded their services to the tri-state area, and color grading suites in Montclair or Asbury Park provide high-end finishing without the Manhattan markup. For music videos, I often collaborate with editors who work remotely, but having a local colorist can cut turnaround time significantly.

Location Logistics and Permits

Newark’s film office is one of the most filmmaker-friendly in the region, with a dedicated team that moves quickly on permits. The city’s tax incentives, including a 20% refundable credit for qualified production expenses, are a major draw for commercial and narrative projects. Compare that to NYC, where the same incentives exist but the competition for permits and locations is fierce.

For run-and-gun shoots, Jersey City’s waterfront parks and the Pine Barrens’ untouched landscapes offer options without the red tape of Manhattan. But be mindful of seasonal constraints: winter shoots in North Jersey can mean sudden weather changes, while summer humidity near the coast can wreak havoc on equipment. Always budget for weather contingencies.

Collaborating with Local Crews

New Jersey’s talent pool is deep, thanks to its proximity to NYC. Many of the same grips, gaffers, and ACs who work on major studio productions in Manhattan also take on NJ gigs. Rates are typically 10-15% lower than in NYC, and the crews are accustomed to the state’s unique challenges, from navigating the Turnpike to securing parking for large trucks in tight urban spaces.

I’ve found that local crew members often have relationships with property owners, which can simplify location scouting. For example, a gaffer I work with regularly has connections to several abandoned factories in Paterson, which we’ve used for music videos and commercials. These kinds of insider tips save time and money.

The Music Video Advantage

New Jersey has a rich musical history, and that extends to its visual storytelling. As a music video director, I’ve worked with artists ranging from underground hip-hop acts in Newark to mainstream pop stars shooting in Asbury Park. The state’s varied aesthetics—gritty cityscapes, beachfronts, and suburban neighborhoods—allow for a wide range of creative directions.

For budget-conscious artists, NJ’s lower production costs mean more can be allocated to post-production effects or higher-end cameras. According to Billboard, music video budgets have been shrinking industry-wide, but the flexibility of shooting in NJ helps mitigate some of those constraints. I’ve directed videos here for as little as $10K, using natural light and minimal crew, and for upwards of $100K with full production support.
