Hiring a Cinematographer in New Jersey: What to Know

Expert advice from a New Jersey cinematographer on gear, budgets, and local production realities for music videos and films in NJ, NYC, and beyond.

Why New Jersey Is a Hidden Gem for Production

New Jersey isn’t just a cheaper alternative to New York City—it’s a production powerhouse. With the New Jersey Film & Digital Media Tax Credit offering up to 30-35% back on qualifying expenses, clients are increasingly choosing the Garden State for shoots that demand urban backdrops without NYC permits or costs. Newark’s industrial grit, Jersey City’s skyline, and Asbury Park’s vintage charm give cinematographers like me a versatile palette. And with Philadelphia and Atlantic City within a two-hour drive, you can cover multiple looks in a single day.

Gear and Budget Realities for NJ-Based Shoots

Music videos in New Jersey often land in the $15K–$50K range, depending on scale. For indie films, budgets start around $100K for a lean, single-location shoot. My go-to camera for most projects is the ARRI ALEXA Mini LF—its low-light performance is unmatched for night exteriors in Hoboken or the Pine Barrens. For tighter budgets, the RED Komodo 6K holds its own, especially for handheld work in tight spaces like Newark’s Ironbound district. Lenses? A set of Zeiss Supreme Primes gives that cinematic depth, but for run-and-gun doc-style shoots, I’ll switch to the Canon CN-E 15.5-47mm for flexibility.

Lighting is where New Jersey’s industrial spaces shine. Warehouses in Elizabeth or Bayonne have high ceilings and raw textures that pair well with Aputure 300D II units for controlled, moody setups. For exteriors, I rely on LiteMat 4L panels—they’re lightweight, battery-powered, and perfect for golden-hour shoots along the Hudson River.

Permits, Locations, and Local Logistics

Permitting in New Jersey is smoother than NYC but still requires planning. Jersey City and Newark have streamlined processes for film permits, often approving within 5–7 business days. For street closures, you’ll need to coordinate with local police departments, and fees can range from $200 to $2,000 depending on the scope. Pro tip: The NJ Motion Picture & Television Commission’s website lists pre-approved locations, saving you weeks of scouting.

Traffic is another factor. The Turnpike and Parkway are efficient, but bridge tolls add up—budget $10–$20 per vehicle for crossings between NJ and NYC. And if you’re shooting in Atlantic City, factor in parking costs for your crew; some lots charge up to $30 per vehicle for all-day access.

Working Across NJ, NYC, and Beyond

Most of my clients are based in NYC but shoot in NJ for cost savings. The two states are so intertwined that I often split days between them—morning calls in Montclair, afternoons in Brooklyn. For projects in Philadelphia or Miami, I’ll fly into PHL or MIA with a Pelican case of essentials: the ALEXA Mini LF, a DJI Ronin 2 for stabilization, and a small LED panel for fill light. Atlanta’s growing film infrastructure means I can rent gear locally, but I always bring my own lenses to maintain consistency.

One challenge in NJ is crew availability. While NYC has an oversaturated talent pool, NJ’s crew base is smaller but highly skilled. I’ve built a network of reliable gaffers, grips, and ACs who know the state’s quirks—like which parking garages in Jersey City have the best loading access for gear.

How to Choose the Right Cinematographer in New Jersey

Not all cinematographers are created equal. Look for someone with experience in your genre—music videos demand a different energy than narrative films. Check their reel for consistency in lighting, framing, and color grading. And ask about their workflow: Do they shoot in ProRes RAW for flexibility in post? Are they comfortable with drone work for aerial shots over the Palisades?

Budget transparency is key. A cinematographer who lowballs upfront often cuts corners on crew, gear, or post-production. For a mid-tier music video, expect to pay $1,500–$3,000 per day for a DP with a full package (camera, lighting, grip). For commercials or features, that jumps to $4,000–$8,000 per day.
