Why Anamorphic Lenses Transform Music Videos

Anamorphic cinematography isn’t just a stylistic choice—it’s a storytelling tool. The 2.39:1 aspect ratio widens the frame, creating a cinematic scope that feels immersive and premium. For music videos, this translates to a visual language that mirrors high-end feature films, which is why artists like Kendrick Lamar and The Weeknd often rely on it to match their narrative ambition. The horizontal compression and desqueeze process also introduce organic artifacts: oval bokeh, soft edges, and those iconic blue streaks from flares. These aren’t flaws; they’re signatures.

The emotional weight is undeniable. For tighter budgets, the Blackmagic Pocket 6K Pro can work in a pinch, though you’ll sacrifice some dynamic range and low-light performance.

Don’t overlook the rig. Anamorphic lenses are heavier, so a sturdy matte box and follow focus system are non-negotiable. In Newark, where I’m based, rental houses like AbelCine and BorrowLenses stock these setups, but I’ve seen crews in NYC and LA bring their own to save on costs.

Budgeting Realities: Cities and Trade-offs

Expect to pay 15–25% more for crew on an anamorphic project compared to a spherical lens shoot. This is why I always advise clients to allocate at least 30% of their budget to cinematography—any less, and the visuals will suffer.

Lighting and Composition Tips

Anamorphic lenses thrive on contrast. The flares and oval bokeh are most pronounced when you light with hard sources, like HMIs or LEDs with grid diffusion. In my experience, soft lighting can wash out the anamorphic look, so I often use a combination of key lights and practicals to create depth. Post-Production Considerations

Anamorphic footage requires desqueezing in post, which can be done in-camera or in software like Premiere Pro or Resolve. The desqueeze process stretches the image horizontally to correct the distortion, but it also affects the resolution. Shooting in 4K or higher is essential to maintain quality after desqueezing.

Color grading is where the magic happens. Anamorphic lenses often have a warmer, more saturated look out of the box, but this can be refined in post. I’ve found that pushing the highlights slightly and adding a subtle teal tint to the shadows can enhance the cinematic feel. When Anamorphic Isn’t the Right Choice
